Great Britain’s historic windmill sites

Dumfries Museum Observatory is a former windmill tower at Dumfries, later converted into an observatory and museum building. The camera obscura was installed in the tower in 1836.

Windmill Plantation, Old Windmill is the remains of a late eighteenth-century circular-plan windmill near Leswalt in Dumfries and Galloway. The site is listed by Historic Environment Scotland.

Sorn Mill is a recorded former windmill site near Sorn in East Ayrshire. The site is known from Scottish windmill lists and nineteenth-century mapping.

Ballantrae Windmill is a ruined vaulted tower windmill on Mill Hill at Ballantrae in South Ayrshire. It is an early surviving Scottish windmill structure.

Monkton, Whiteside, Dovecot is a former vaulted tower windmill at Monkton in South Ayrshire. The windmill was later converted into a dovecot.

Shortrigg, Steading, Windmill And Horse-Gin House is a former windmill and horse-gin complex near Hoddom in Dumfries and Galloway. The site is an unusual survival of two farm power systems.

Duncow, Windmill is a former seventeenth-century windmill near Duncow in the parish of Kirkmahoe. The surviving tower is listed as Castlehill Farm Former Windmill.

Mouswald Grange Former Windmill Tower, Kiln Block And North East Range Of Steading is a late eighteenth-century former windmill tower at Mouswald Grange. The windmill was later incorporated into a steading group.

Stoneykirk, Windmill is a former eighteenth-century windmill near Stoneykirk in Wigtownshire. The site is also known as Low Culgroat and Windmill Plantation.

Whithorn Windmill is a former late eighteenth-century tower meal mill at Whithorn in Dumfries and Galloway. The surviving structure is known locally as the Stump.
