About HAAbase Windmills

HAAbase Windmills is a research-led register of historic windmill sites across Great Britain, covering England, Scotland and Wales. It includes surviving mills, partial remains, converted structures, ruins, and site-only records where the location or history of a former windmill can be established.

The project focuses on recording what survives today, bringing together location data, mapping, photography, and description to document each mill’s form, condition, setting, and relationship to the surrounding landscape.

Windmills were once an important part of rural life across Great Britain, supporting milling, drainage, agriculture, and local industry. Although many have been demolished, converted, or reduced to fragments, their sites remain important evidence of rural development, local production, and historic wind power.
