History
Greatham windmill was a tower mill used for corn milling. It stood at Greatham in the historic county of Durham and is recorded in specialist mill records as a wind-powered corn mill. Historic mapping and mill databases preserve its position in the village's milling landscape.
The surviving record includes early photographic material. A postcard image of Greatham Windmill was in circulation by 1907, showing that the structure still formed a recognised local subject in the early twentieth century. The mill did not survive the mid twentieth century. It was demolished in 1948, ending the physical survival of the tower mill on the site.
Greatham windmill is therefore represented as a former tower corn mill site rather than as a standing windmill. Its recorded history preserves the type, function, location, photographic record, and demolition date of one of the former wind-powered corn mills of the Durham and Teesside area.
