Site overview

Hart Windmill stands off Old School Lane at Hart, south-east of Hart Mill Farmhouse. The Grade II listed structure is an early nineteenth-century tower windmill built of random limestone rubble, rendered, with renewed cement render to the north side. It is a tapered circular tower of three storeys, with doorways to the east and west, a blocked south-east doorway, a loft door to the middle floor, and segmental-headed openings.

Most of the machinery survives, although the stones are missing. The tower and surviving machinery were rescued through a partnership project involving Tees Heritage, the Employment Training Programme, and local housebuilders Cecil M. Yuill.

History

Hart Windmill is the former tower mill standing off Old School Lane at Hart, about sixty metres south-east of Hart Mill Farmhouse. The listed structure dates from the early nineteenth century and is built of random limestone rubble, rendered externally, with renewed cement render to the north side. The tower is circular, tapered, and three storeys high.

The building retains a clear working form. There are doorways to the east and west, a blocked doorway to the south-east, and a loft door on the south-east side of the middle floor. Window openings with brick segmental heads survive on several levels. The listing records most machinery as intact, although the stones are absent. That surviving machinery gives the mill particular value as more than a masonry shell.

Hart Windmill was listed at Grade II in 1973. In the later twentieth century, the tower and surviving machinery were rescued from near loss through a partnership involving Tees Heritage, the Employment Training Programme, and Hartlepool housebuilders Cecil M. Yuill. Later records describe the site as disused but otherwise substantially intact. Hart Windmill now survives as a protected and technically informative remnant of wind-powered milling in the village of Hart.
