Site overview

Gale's Mill, also known as Barn Green Mill, was a tower corn mill at Denmead. The mill is recorded at SU 672 142 and was built in 1819. Its working life ended after serious fire damage in 1900, and the remaining structure was demolished in 1922.

The site is now a lost windmill location rather than a surviving mill building. Its history forms part of Denmead's wider milling landscape, which included several wind-powered sites with overlapping names in nineteenth-century records. The surviving record identifies Gale's Mill as a brick tower mill, distinct from the timber smock mill also associated with Denmead.

History

Gale's Mill, also known as Barn Green Mill, was one of Denmead's recorded windmills and stood at SU 672 142. It was built in 1819 as a tower mill, forming part of a local milling landscape in which the names Denmead, Glidden, and Barn Green were sometimes confused in later accounts.

The mill worked as a wind-powered corn mill during the nineteenth century. Its later history is defined by loss of function and fabric. A fire in 1900 badly damaged the mill, and the remaining structure was demolished in 1922. No standing windmill structure survives at the site. The positive record therefore identifies Gale's Mill as a nineteenth-century Denmead tower mill with a clearly recorded end point, rather than as a converted or preserved survival. Its place in the register is as a documented lost windmill site whose former tower stood in the Barn Green area of Denmead.
