Site overview

Danzey Green Windmill is a Grade II listed post mill at Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings, Stoke Heath. It was probably built in the early nineteenth century, originally at Danzey Green in Warwickshire, and was brought to Avoncroft in 1969. The mill was re-erected and restored in 1971.

It is a timber-framed, weatherboarded Midlands post mill on a brick base, with one pair of spring sails, one pair of canvas sails, a tail pole with steps, and mostly original machinery including the brake wheel. The mill has worked again by wind in preservation and remains one of the museum's major historic buildings.

History

Danzey Green Windmill is a Midlands post mill now standing at Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings, Stoke Heath. The mill was originally from Danzey Green, Warwickshire, and was moved to Avoncroft in 1969. It was re-erected and restored in 1971, preserving a rare regional post-mill form within a museum setting.

The listed structure is an early nineteenth-century post mill, probably built by Robert Summers. It is timber-framed and weatherboarded, carried on a brick base shaped as a truncated cone. The base encloses the wooden support for the buck and has entrances with segmental heads. The buck has one internal floor, and the tail pole incorporates steps up to it. The sails comprise one pair of spring sails and one pair of canvas sails.

Most of the machinery inside the mill is original, including the brake wheel. The mill drives a single pair of stones directly from the brake wheel, preserving a clear example of post-mill working arrangement. After restoration at Avoncroft, the mill became a working museum exhibit. The sails were removed during repair work in 2005, and the mill returned to wind working in 2006. It suffered storm damage in 2012 when one of the sails broke and damaged the lower roof, but it remains a protected Grade II listed windmill and an important survival of Midlands post-mill construction.
