Site overview

West Mill at Smarden, also known as Corne's Mill or Town Mill, was a post corn mill on Cage Lane. The site is protected as a Grade II listed structure under the name Remains of Windmill in Grounds of Mill House. The mill is eighteenth-century or earlier in origin and was photographed intact but disused in 1932.

It had been worked by the Corne family and ceased working in 1912. The post mill is believed to have collapsed in 1953. The main post, cross trees, and brick piers survived for many years, but the site is now recorded as retaining only the brick piers.

History

West Mill was the post mill at Cage Lane, Smarden. It is also known as Corne's Mill or Town Mill, names reflecting its association with the Corne family and its place in the village's milling landscape. The listed remains are described as eighteenth-century or earlier, preserving the long history of a post mill at this site.

The mill worked as a wind-powered corn mill. Historic England archive material records West Mill intact but disused in August 1932, and the image description identifies it as an old post mill worked by the Corne family. It ceased working in 1912 and is believed to have collapsed in 1953. The listing originally protected the remains of the post mill, consisting of the wooden upright that formerly turned the mill and four beams resting on four red-brick piers.

The physical survival has reduced further over time. Specialist mill records note that the cross trees and main post survived for many years and achieved listed-building status, but that only the brick piers remain on site. West Mill is therefore a fragmentary but protected survival of a Kent post mill, retaining the structural footprint of the former trestle in the grounds of Mill House.
