Site overview

Feakins's Mill was a wind-powered corn mill at Whitstable in Kent. It is recorded as a smock mill and formed one of the group of historic Whitstable windmills, separate from the surviving Black Mill on Borstal Hill. The mill stood near Whitstable railway station and was associated with the Feakins name.

It was working by wind until the late nineteenth century and was demolished in the early twentieth century. The site is now a former windmill site rather than a surviving complete mill, but it remains a named element in Whitstable's nineteenth-century milling history.

History

Feakins's Mill was one of the historic windmills of Whitstable. It stood near Whitstable railway station and is recorded as a wind-powered corn mill. Specialist mill records identify it as a smock mill, while wider windmill listings distinguish it from Black Mill, Borstal Hill Mill and the other Whitstable mill sites.

The mill was part of the nineteenth-century corn-milling landscape of the town. Published windmill lists give 1843 as the date associated with Feakins's Mill and record that it worked by wind until 1891. Its later history was shorter than that of Black Mill: after falling out of wind-powered use, it was demolished in 1905. The site is therefore best treated as a former smock corn mill site, with the historic name preserved through mill records and Whitstable windmill documentation.

No substantial standing mill body survives at the site. Its importance for the gazetteer lies in separating it from the surviving Black Mill and in preserving the record of Whitstable's wider group of wind-powered corn mills.
