Site overview

Carr Hill Mill, also known as Kirkham Windmill, is a former tower corn mill at Dowbridge, Kirkham. The surviving tower stands on a long-established milling site, with earlier mills recorded in the medieval period and the present brick tower built in 1812. The mill had ceased working by 1865, and by the early twentieth century only the hollow brick tower remained.

Later photographs record the tower without cap or sails and with painted advertisements on the outer walls. The tower has since been converted for domestic use, preserving the main fabric of the former wind-powered corn mill within the townscape of Kirkham.

History

Carr Hill Mill stands at Dowbridge, Kirkham, on a site associated with wind-powered milling over a long period. Historic records place a mill at Kirkham by the fourteenth century, with the mill in need of rebuilding or repair in 1337 and an early reference in 1343. The present tower windmill was built in 1812 on the established Mill Hill or Carr Hill site.

The mill worked as a corn mill but had ceased operating by 1865. By the early twentieth century the cap, sails, floors, and working machinery had gone, leaving the hollow brick tower as the principal survival. A mid twentieth-century survey described the tower in poor condition, and photographs record the former mill with commercial advertisements painted on the exterior.

The tower has since been converted for residential use. Although the working windmill has lost its cap, sails, and internal machinery, the surviving tower preserves a substantial physical reminder of Kirkham's wind-powered corn-milling history and the long continuity of milling on the Dowbridge site.
