Site overview

Warbreck Mill was a former windmill site in the Warbreck area of Blackpool. Local historical references identify Warbreck Mill as part of Blackpool's earlier windmill landscape, active from the eighteenth century and gone by the later nineteenth century. The site belongs to the wider Fylde tradition of wind-powered corn milling, in which mills stood on exposed ground before Blackpool expanded into a resort and urban settlement.

The physical mill structure no longer survives, but the Warbreck name and local historical references preserve the memory of a former windmill on or near Warbreck Hill. Its history is therefore represented as a site rather than a surviving tower or working mill.

History

Warbreck Mill was one of the former windmills of the Blackpool area. Local historical references identify it with the Warbreck Hill district and record it as part of the wind-powered milling landscape that existed before the modern expansion of Blackpool. The mill is associated with the period from 1727 to 1865, placing it among the earlier windmills of the Fylde.

The site reflects the former rural and agricultural character of Warbreck before the district was absorbed into the growing town. Like other Fylde mills, it would have used the exposed coastal plain and prevailing winds for corn milling. The later development of Blackpool removed the physical setting of many such sites, leaving only a small number of surviving structures in the borough.

Warbreck Mill no longer survives as a standing windmill. Its significance now lies in the documented place-name and its contribution to the lost windmill landscape of Blackpool and the Fylde. The site is best treated as a former windmill location rather than as a surviving structural record.
