Site overview

Arnesby Windmill is a Grade II listed brick tower mill at Arnesby. The tower is dated 1815 and was built as a corn mill. It is a five-storey battered brick tower, later restored and converted for domestic use.

The listing records extensive restoration around 1976, when the top storey was partly rebuilt and a wooden ogee cap, four common sails, fantail, and staging were reconstructed to restore the external appearance of the mill. The surviving windshaft is second-hand and is believed to have come from a Norfolk mill. Arnesby Windmill remains a prominent village landmark and one of the surviving tower mills of Leicestershire.

History

Arnesby Windmill stands at Arnesby as a surviving early nineteenth-century tower corn mill. The listed tower carries the date 1815 and is built in battered brick over five storeys. Its openings include cambered-headed doorways and small windows on each floor. The tower form reflects the more substantial brick-built windmill type that appeared alongside the older post-mill tradition in Leicestershire.

The mill was later restored and adapted for domestic use. Around 1976 the building underwent extensive restoration. The top storey was partly rebuilt, and the external form was completed with a wooden ogee cap, four common sails, a fantail, and new staging. These elements were modern reconstructions of the mill's historic appearance rather than a complete survival of the original working gear. The listing also records that the windshaft is second-hand and believed to have come from a mill in Norfolk.

Arnesby Windmill is now a house-converted tower mill, retaining its strong brick tower and restored windmill silhouette within the village. Its Grade II designation reflects the survival of the tower and the restored historic form of the building.
