Spilsby Road Mill was built at Horncastle in 1843. It was a tower windmill, forming part of the town's nineteenth-century milling landscape. Horncastle had several recorded windmill sites, and Spilsby Road Mill is the surviving named tower mill associated with the eastern approach to the town.

The mill was a very tall tower mill. Its height and durable masonry construction distinguished it from earlier post mills and from smaller rural windmills. After its milling function ended, the building was converted into a home. That conversion preserved the tower as a domestic structure rather than allowing the former windmill to disappear.

Spilsby Road Mill is protected as a listed building, with the listing recorded in 1987. The present building is therefore a converted windmill survival rather than a restored working mill. Its significance lies in the survival of the tall tower, its documented 1843 construction date, and its continued presence in Horncastle's historic townscape.
