Site overview

Glenside Mill is a former tower corn mill at Pinchbeck, also recorded as Speed's Mill and West Mill. The county windmill list records the tower mill as dating from 1812. Specialist mill records identify the site as a wind-powered tower mill with a corn-milling function.

It was one of several Pinchbeck windmills, alongside Horse and Jockey Mill, Northgate or Seller's Mill, and Risegate Mill. The public record is strongest for the mill's identity, alternative names, early nineteenth-century date, tower-mill form, and corn-milling function. It belongs to the wider South Holland windmilling landscape north of Spalding.

History

Glenside Mill stood at Pinchbeck, a large village north of Spalding in South Holland. It is also recorded as Speed's Mill and West Mill, names that distinguish it from the other Pinchbeck tower mills. The county windmill list dates the mill to 1812.

The mill was a wind-powered tower corn mill. Its working life formed part of the dense South Holland milling landscape, where several mills served Pinchbeck and the surrounding fenland farms. Pinchbeck also had Horse and Jockey Mill, Northgate or Seller's Mill, Risegate Mill, and an earlier post mill, showing that the village supported repeated phases of wind-powered grain processing.

The surviving public record establishes Glenside Mill as the 1812 Pinchbeck tower mill and preserves its alternative names. Although detailed machinery and closure history are less fully recorded in public summaries, the mill's identity and place in the village's windmilling landscape are clear.
