Site overview

Grebby Mill at Scremby is a former tower corn mill dated 1812. It replaced an earlier post mill and later worked in connection with Dobson's mill at Burgh le Marsh. The mill was still working in the mid twentieth century, with two sails remaining by 1946, and ceased work in late 1949.

Its last pair of sails were removed to Cross in Hand post mill in Sussex, where they were adapted and continued in use until 1969. The cap and ironwork were removed around 1963, after which the mill stood derelict. The four-storey brick tower was later incorporated into a house and adapted with a glazed conical roof.

History

Grebby Mill at Scremby is a former tower corn mill whose surviving fabric incorporates a dated 1812 tower. The mill replaced an earlier post mill and became part of the working corn-milling landscape of the Lincolnshire Wolds. In its later working life it was operated by Dobson in conjunction with their mill at Burgh le Marsh.

Mid twentieth-century photographs show the mill before its final reduction, and by 1946 only two sails remained. Work finally ceased in late 1949. The last pair of sails did not disappear immediately from milling use: they were taken to Cross in Hand post mill in Sussex, altered to fit a stock, and continued to work there until 1969.

Grebby Mill itself lost its cap and ironwork around 1963 and was then left derelict. The tower later became part of a house. Its original four storeys were retained and adapted with a ring of windows and a glazed conical roof, leaving the former corn mill as a recognisable converted tower within the Grebby landscape.
