Site overview

Money's Mill is a former tower corn mill in Money's Yard, Sleaford. Built in 1796 for Henry Sutton, it stood at the head of the Sleaford Navigation and was positioned for canal-side grain traffic. The mill was already depicted in 1798 with a broad reefing stage, squat ogee cap, fantail, and four common sails.

It was rebuilt or modernised around 1810 and raised slightly. The mill worked until 1895, when the miller became bankrupt, and it was subsequently dismantled. The tall listed tower survives, later restored and adapted for commercial use.

History

Money's Mill stands in Money's Yard, close to Southgate and the Slea Navigation in central Sleaford. Henry Sutton, a baker with premises on Southgate, had the massive brick tower mill built in 1796, two years after the Sleaford Navigation opened to traffic. Its canal-side position allowed grain to be brought directly to the mill.

An engraving of about 1798 shows the mill with a broad reefing stage, squat ogee cap with fantail, and four common sails. The tower was probably rebuilt or modernised around 1810 and raised slightly. The mill had three pairs of stones and formerly had substantial buildings attached to its base, including associated granary and bakehouse buildings.

It continued working through the nineteenth century until 1895, when the miller became bankrupt. The mill was then dismantled. The surviving tower stands to approaching 70 feet and is a distinctive feature of central Sleaford.

In 1986 the Sleaford and District Civic Trust restored the mill, including a replica ogee cap. The Grade II listed former windmill has since been used for commercial purposes, including as a café and bistro.
