Site overview

Waddingham Mill, also known as Anderson's Mill, is a former tower corn mill on High Street, Waddingham. The Grade II listed tower dates from the early nineteenth century and is built of bitumen-painted brick on a stone plinth. It is a three-storey tower with a plain top, planked door, and segment-headed openings to each floor.

The mill was originally four-sailed and four-floored. It worked by wind until about 1910 and was then driven by engine until 1946. The tower was later converted, with photographic records showing a capless tower in the late twentieth century and a house-converted tower with a replica cap in the 2000s.

History

Waddingham Mill stands on High Street in Waddingham and is also known in specialist mill sources as Anderson's Mill. The surviving tower is an early nineteenth-century former tower corn mill. Its listed fabric is a bitumen-painted brick tower on a stone plinth, now three storeys high with a plain top.

The doorway has a plain planked door, and each floor above has a segment-headed opening. The mill was a four-sailed mill with four floors during its working life. It worked by wind until about 1910, after which engine power continued to drive milling until 1946.

Archive descriptions also record an engine addition in the 1910s and three pairs of stones. Later photographs show the tower after the loss of its cap and sails, and subsequent images record the building converted as part of domestic use with a replica cap. The surviving listed tower preserves the reduced form of Waddingham's former tower corn mill within the village street.
