Site overview

Hogsthorpe Mill was a tower windmill at Hogsthorpe. County windmill records date the mill to about 1803 and specialist windmill mapping identifies it as a tower mill. The mill stood in a village close to the Lincolnshire coastal marshes, serving the agricultural landscape around Hogsthorpe.

It was still standing in 1945, placing its physical survival into the mid twentieth century. The recorded history is strongest for the mill's type, approximate date, location, and later survival rather than for a detailed account of owners, millers, machinery, or final demolition.

History

Hogsthorpe Mill was an early nineteenth-century tower windmill at Hogsthorpe. It is recorded with a date of about 1803 and identified as a tower mill, the form that became characteristic of many Lincolnshire corn mills during this period. The mill served a rural village close to the Lincolnshire coastal plain, where wind-powered milling formed part of the agricultural economy.

The building was still standing in 1945, showing that it survived as a visible structure into the mid twentieth century. Later records preserve the site as a former tower mill, but the detailed working chronology, machinery, and final loss of the tower are less fully documented in readily accessible sources. Its recorded identity remains significant as one of the former village tower mill sites of the Lincolnshire coastland.
