Site overview

South Witham Mill was a tower windmill at South Witham. Specialist windmill mapping records possible trace remains in the ground, with millstones standing by the gateposts of Mill House. The site is therefore represented by residual physical evidence rather than by a standing tower.

Its documented identity places it within the wind-powered milling landscape of south-west Lincolnshire, where former mill sites often survive through place-names, reused machinery, and fragmentary remains.

History

South Witham Mill was a tower windmill site at South Witham. The former mill no longer survives as a standing tower, but specialist windmill records describe possible trace remains in the ground and millstones standing by the gateposts of Mill House. Those recorded fragments preserve a direct material association with the former windmill.

The site's history is documented chiefly through its identity, location, type, and surviving traces rather than through a detailed operational chronology. It is nevertheless a positive example of how former windmill sites can remain legible after demolition, with millstones and ground traces marking the position and memory of the former tower mill within the village landscape.
