Site overview

Risegate Mill is a surviving tower corn mill at Gosberton Risegate, on Risegate Road within the linear fenland settlement west of Gosberton. The Grade II listed red-brick tower is a four-stage nineteenth-century windmill, originally built with four sails. It is one of the notable unrestored Lincolnshire mills retaining its windshaft and cross, although the cross has lost one of its arms.

The original cap has been replaced by a corrugated-iron version, and the tower survives within a working rural and light-industrial village setting.

History

Risegate Mill was built in 1824 as a tower corn mill at Gosberton Risegate. The mill stood on Risegate Road within the long east-west settlement beside Risegate Eau, part of the south Lincolnshire fenland landscape. It was originally a four-sailed tower mill and became one of the principal historic structures within the hamlet.

The surviving tower is a four-stage red-brick structure. It is protected as a Grade II listed building under the official name Mill at Healey and Dobney Limited. The mill is especially significant as one of the few unrestored Lincolnshire windmills retaining its windshaft and cross. The cross has lost one of its four arms but remains mounted on the square end of the windshaft with eight pairs of keys. The original cap has been replaced by a corrugated-iron cap similar in character to the later covering used at Moulton Mill.

Twentieth-century photographs record the standing tower in 1934 and show its continued survival in the working landscape of Gosberton Risegate. Later records describe the tower adapted for storage or grain-silo use within a surrounding group of industrial and agricultural buildings. The mill remains a visible remnant of the village's wind-powered corn-milling history, with unusual survival of windshaft and cross despite its unrestored condition.
