Site overview

Pettingell's Mill, also known as Seven Mile House, is a former drainage windpump on Haddiscoe Chedgrave Marshes. The listed-building record describes it as a nineteenth-century disused drainage windpump with a battered tarred-brick tower, circular in plan and three storeys high. First-floor openings retain wooden shutters, and the west side has a square-headed ground-floor doorway.

The cap and sails had been removed by the time of listing, replaced by a twentieth-century corrugated-iron roof. A large-diameter external scoop wheel of iron and timber survives on the north side of the tower. Later photographic records describe the mill as an ivy-clad former drainage mill seen from the River Waveney.

The available sources provide strong evidence for its surviving fabric and protection, but limited detail for its working chronology.

History

Pettingell's Mill stands on Haddiscoe Chedgrave Marshes and is also known as Seven Mile House. It was a drainage windpump, built in the nineteenth century to serve the marsh drainage system. The surviving structure is a battered tarred-brick tower, circular on plan and three storeys high.

The first-floor openings have wooden shutters, and the west side contains a square-headed ground-floor doorway. Its cap and sails had been removed by the time the listed-building description was compiled, and a twentieth-century roof of corrugated-iron sheeting had replaced the working cap. The mill retained a large-diameter external scoop wheel of iron and timber construction on the north side of the tower.

Historic England lists the building at Grade II. Later photographic records from 2008 describe Pettingell's Drainage Mill as an ivy-clad former drainage mill visible from the River Waveney. The consulted sources do not identify a precise construction date beyond the nineteenth century, nor do they give a final working date, but they document the survival of the tower, the loss of the cap and sails, and the retention of the external scoop wheel.
