Site overview

Stalham Staithe Tower Mill was a three-storey black-tarred tower corn mill at Stalham Staithe. North Norfolk District Council's conservation area appraisal records the mill and adjacent mill house on Mill Road as constructed around 1817. The mill had a Norfolk boat-shaped cap with a petticoat, a tail pole, and a left-handed six-bladed fan.

Four double-shuttered patent sails powered two pairs of stones and a flour mill. Norfolk Mills records the sails on 45-foot stocks, with rack-and-pinion striking. Later photographic records show the tower surviving after its working machinery had been removed.

Recent sources identify the former tower mill as a holiday home, while the conservation appraisal records its historic relationship with the adjacent mill house and Stalham Staithe's river-based trade.

History

Stalham Staithe Tower Mill stood at Mill Road, Stalham Staithe, with an adjacent mill house. The Stalham Staithe Conservation Area Appraisal records the mill and mill house as constructed around 1817. The mill was a corn mill with a three-storey black-tarred tower.

Norfolk Mills describes its Norfolk boat-shaped cap, which had a petticoat, a tail pole, and a left-handed six-bladed fan. Four double-shuttered patent sails worked the mill, struck by rack and pinion and carried on 45-foot stocks. One pair of sails had eight bays of three shutters, and the other pair had seven bays of three shutters and one bay of two shutters.

The machinery powered two pairs of stones and a flour mill. Historic images show the mill in 1907 and around 1917. The later working chronology is less fully documented in the consulted sources, but museum and photographic records show the remains of the tower after the removal of its sails and working machinery.

A museum image records the derelict base of the tower with a large cog propped against the wall near the doorway. Later online windmill records describe the site as a tower corn mill and identify the former mill as surviving in converted use.
