Plessey Windmill stands south-west of Plessey Checks roundabout and is identified in specialist mill records as Plessey Windmill, Stannington. It was a wind-powered corn mill, and the surviving tower is one of the better-documented Northumberland windmill remains. The building is dated 1749, with the initials M W on the south doorway lintel, identified in the listing as Matthew White. It is built of good-quality squared stone and differs from many tapering mill towers by being a straight-sided round tower.

The structure had three floor levels, although the exterior has no clear external division between them. It has a chamfered plinth, opposed doorways on the ground floor, three small windows on each upper floor, and chamfered surrounds to all openings. The interior retains evidence of its former floors and machinery through surviving sockets, and two plain first-floor fireplaces are also recorded. By the time of listing the building survived as an intact shell without roof or floors. It was first listed at Grade II on 15 July 1987.
