Site overview

Tuxford Windmill is a restored working tower mill at Mill Mount on the Great North Road, Tuxford. The site was built around 1810 and originally contained a tower mill and a post mill known together as the Tuxford Twins. The tower mill survived after both mills ceased working in the early twentieth century; the post mill was demolished in 1950.

The tower mill was restored by the Ostick family and received recognition for its 1995 restoration. It was purchased in 2005 and established as a privately owned heritage business. The mill now produces stoneground flour using wind power and has an associated shop, educational visits, and other visitor uses.

The tower mill is Grade II listed as Windmill at Mill Mount.

History

Tuxford Windmill stands at Mill Mount beside the Great North Road in Tuxford. It was built around 1810 on a site that held both a tower mill and a post mill, a pair known as the Tuxford Twins. The post mill was unusual for having a fantail, and later accounts describe the pair as a distinctive local milling group. The tower mill was the survivor of the two structures. Both mills ceased functioning in the early twentieth century as industrial milling displaced traditional wind milling, and the tower mill was damaged in the 1920s. The post mill was demolished in 1950.

The tower mill was restored to working order by the Ostick family, with the restoration recognised in 1995. In 2005 it was purchased and established as a privately owned heritage business. It now works as a traditional wind-powered flour mill, using organic grain mainly grown in Lincolnshire and Leicestershire and milling flour on site. The mill produces wholemeal and sifted flours and also supports visits, baking classes, educational use, and visitor facilities. The building is listed at Grade II as Windmill at Mill Mount, first listed on 28 February 1952 and amended in 1985. A separate listed windmill at Stone Road End also survives in Tuxford, but the supplied coordinates match the Mill Mount tower mill.
