Site overview

Kneeton Hills Mill is the surviving East Bridgford Windmill on Kneeton Road. The site is recorded as a tower corn mill, with construction phases in 1769 and 1841, followed by a three-stage raising in 1852. The present structure is a round battered brick tower of six stages with cogged eaves, a flat roof, and rows of windows.

Two rows of iron sockets for gallery mounting survive, and a datestone inscribed “T.H. Clark Builder 1841” is recorded at first-floor level. The mill was first listed as Grade II on 6 July 1984. Specialist windmill records identify it as Kneeton Hills Mill, while the statutory listing uses the broader name East Bridgford Windmill.

The available evidence provides strong architectural phasing but does not identify the final working date or later ownership history.

History

Kneeton Hills Mill stands on Kneeton Road at East Bridgford. The supplied coordinates match the listed East Bridgford Windmill at National Grid Reference SK 70349 44384, not Bingham. The mill was a tower corn mill.

Its recorded development began in 1769, and a later building phase is dated to 1841. In 1852 the tower was raised by three stages, producing the present six-stage form. The tower is built of brick and has a round battered profile, cogged eaves, and a flat roof.

The windows are mainly pivoted cross casements with stone lintels. Two rows of iron sockets for gallery mounting survive, indicating the former arrangement around the tower. A doorway on the south side has an obliterated datestone above it, while the first floor has a datestone inscribed “T.H. Clark Builder 1841.” Additional doors survive on the east and west sides at third-stage level, and the other stages have windows in vertical rows.

The mill was first listed as Grade II on 6 July 1984. The available sources do not provide a confirmed final operational date.
