Site overview

The Old Windmill at Norwell is a surviving tower mill on Main Street. It was built in 1852, as recorded by a datestone above the north doorway, and is listed at Grade II. The tower is a battered round tarred brick structure of three stages, later altered in the twentieth century and linked to a bungalow.

Its cap and sails were removed in 1920, and the tower now has a concrete slab roof. The first stage has a north stable door with a segmental head, an east casement, and a west-side twentieth-century link. The upper stages have casements to north and south.

Specialist records identify it as a tower corn mill. The sources confirm its construction date, windmill type, loss of cap and sails, listed status, and later adaptation.

History

The Old Windmill stands on the south side of Main Street in Norwell. It was built as a tower windmill in 1852, the date being preserved on a datestone above the north doorway. The structure is a battered round tower of tarred brick rising through three stages. The first stage has a stable door to the north with a segmental head and an east casement, while a flat-roofed twentieth-century link connects the west side to a later bungalow. The second and third stages each have casements to north and south. The former cap and sails were removed in 1920, and the tower was later given a concrete slab roof.

Norwell had more than one historic windmill, but the supplied coordinates correspond to the surviving listed Main Street tower. The mill was first listed at Grade II on 6 January 1976. Specialist windmill records identify it as a wind-powered tower corn mill, and archive imagery records the tower in derelict condition before later alteration. The principal surviving fabric is the tarred brick tower, rather than working wind machinery.
