Site overview

North Leverton Windmill is a working tower corn mill at North Leverton, Nottinghamshire. It was built in 1813 by local farmers through the North Leverton Subscription Mill Company and has continued milling from its original construction to the present day. The mill served nearby villages and still regularly grinds flour and animal feeds.

It was raised in 1884 and is a tarred brick tower mill with patent sails, an ogee domed close-boarded cap, fantail, and wind-driven stones. The building was first listed at Grade II* in 1952 and remains in working order. Later repairs followed lightning damage in 1959 and 1972.

The mill is maintained by volunteers and remains a community landmark rather than a static ruin.

History

North Leverton Windmill was built in 1813 by a group of local farmers who formed the North Leverton Subscription Mill Company. The mill was intended to grind corn for members of the company and also served local farmers and poorer residents in the surrounding villages, including Fenton, Habblesthorpe, North Leverton, and Sturton le Steeple. It was built as a wind-powered tower corn mill and has remained in use throughout its life.

The tower was raised in 1884, giving the mill its present taller form. The listed structure is of tarred brick with an ogee domed close-boarded cap, ball finial, timber patent sails, and a fantail. The tower is battered and circular, with three stages and a parallel third stage. The south side has a plank door with a segmental head, and the lower stages have small glazing-bar lights and Yorkshire sash windows. The mill has two wind-driven pairs of stones, with a further pair driven separately by auxiliary power.

North Leverton Windmill was listed at Grade II* on 28 February 1952. A new company was formed in 1956, and the mill required major repairs after lightning damage in July 1959. Further lightning damage occurred in 1972, followed by repairs in 1973. Film records from 1960 show the mill grinding barley for animal feed as part of the local farming economy. The mill remains a working wind corn mill and is maintained by volunteers.
