Site overview

Cleveland Mill at East Markham is a surviving tower corn mill on Priest Gate. It was built in 1837 at a cost of £420 for the miller Thomas Lightfoot. The mill was 42 feet high, with four storeys and four sails, and was worked by wind until about 1920.

It was then worked by steam or oil engines. The Lightfoot family owned the mill through much of its working life. By the later twentieth century it was disused and later converted to domestic accommodation.

The building is listed at Grade II as The Windmill, Priest Gate. Specialist records identify it as Cleveland Mill, East Markham, and archive material records the derelict shell and surviving internal details.

History

Cleveland Mill stands at Priest Gate, East Markham. It was built in 1837 for Thomas Lightfoot, at a recorded cost of £420. The mill was a tower corn mill, 42 feet high, with four storeys and four sails. It was owned by the Lightfoot family through much of its working life and served the cereal-processing economy of the village and surrounding farmland.

The mill was worked by wind until about 1920. After that date, steam or oil engines were used, marking a change from wind-powered milling to auxiliary mechanical power. By the later twentieth century the mill was disused. Photographic and archive records describe it as a derelict tower windmill, and specialist catalogue material records the derelict shell and remaining internal features.

The building was first listed at Grade II on 10 February 1975 under the name The Windmill, Priest Gate. In 1976 it was sold for conversion to a house. Later photographic evidence records the former windmill as living accommodation. The surviving site is therefore a converted historic tower mill rather than a working windmill.
