Site overview

East Mill, Blackthorn, is one of two former tower mills on Blackthorn Hill. A windmill existed on Blackthorn Hill by 1809, and Ordnance Survey maps from 1880 onwards showed two tower mills, distinguished as East Mill and West Mill. East Mill was tile-hung, later lost its sails and cap, and the tower survives.

Specialist windmill records identify the site as a tower corn mill and note that the former tower mill remains stand to curb level, with endless-chain winding and tile-hung construction. The building has since been converted for domestic use. The evidence establishes the site identity, tower-mill type, corn-milling function, distinctive tile-hung fabric, and later conversion, but not a detailed working chronology.

History

East Mill, Blackthorn, stands on Blackthorn Hill near Bicester. The hill had a windmill by 1809, and later nineteenth-century Ordnance Survey mapping showed two tower mills on the hill. These became known as East Mill and West Mill. East Mill was the more easterly of the pair and was a tower corn mill. Its structure was distinctive because it was tile-hung, and specialist mill records also note endless-chain winding.

The mill lost its sails and cap, but the tower survived. Later records describe the remains as standing to curb level, and modern accommodation material records the former windmill as a renovated historic tower. The site is now associated with self-catering accommodation and domestic conversion rather than milling. The surviving evidence confirms the former corn-milling use, tower-mill form, tile-hung construction, loss of sails and cap, and subsequent adaptation. No detailed owner sequence, named millers, machinery inventory, or final working date has been identified in the consulted sources.
