Site overview

Hawkstone Mill is a disused tower mill in Hawkstone Park, Weston-under-Redcastle, Shropshire. It is recorded as a tower mill used for corn milling, bone milling and linseed-oil processing. County windmill listings record the mill from 1808, while specialist records place it at the supplied location.

The building is listed at Grade II* under the name Disused Windmill at NGR SJ 56652 29724, first listed on 16 September 1987. Historic and modern image records show the mill standing as a derelict tower in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The accessible evidence establishes its location, function, survival and protected status, though detailed construction, machinery and closure evidence remains limited.

History

Hawkstone Mill stands in Hawkstone Park at Weston-under-Redcastle. County windmill records identify the site as a tower mill and record it in 1808. Specialist windmill records describe it as a tower mill used not only as a corn mill but also as a bone mill and for linseed-oil processing. The mill is therefore documented as having a broader industrial use than many purely corn-grinding tower mills.

The building was photographed in 1966 and again in later records as a derelict windmill. It was listed on 16 September 1987 and is now recorded at Grade II* as Disused Windmill at NGR SJ 56652 29724. Photographs from 2002 and 2008 show the tower surviving after its working life. The consulted material does not provide a detailed construction account, named millers, cap and sail arrangement, machinery inventory, or final closure date. Its documented record is strongest for early nineteenth-century presence, multiple milling functions, standing derelict survival and statutory protection.
