Site overview

Friston Windmill is a tall post mill with a roundhouse on Mill Road, Friston. It was moved from Woodbridge and erected at Friston in 1812. The mill worked by wind with patent sails and a fantail, later continuing on two sails and then with diesel power.

Wind working ended in 1956 and engine working continued until 1964. The mill was threatened with demolition in the 1960s but was preserved, repaired, and later conserved. It is listed Grade II*.

History

Friston Windmill was moved from Woodbridge by Collins, the Melton millwright, and erected at Friston in 1812 on land purchased by William and Mary Scarlett. The mill was sold to Joseph Collings in the same year and later passed through several millers and owners. Joshua Reynolds bought it in 1837, and the Reynolds and Wright families remained associated with the mill into the twentieth century.

The mill was a tall post mill with a roundhouse, four patent sails, a cast-iron windshaft, and a fantail carried on the rear steps in the Suffolk style. It had three pairs of millstones, with two pairs in the breast and one pair in the tail. One pair of sails was removed in 1943 and was not replaced because of wartime timber shortages.

The mill then worked on two sails until 1956 and continued with diesel power until 1964. Demolition was permitted in 1965 but was not carried out. Further debate followed in 1968, and local fundraising helped secure repairs from 1971.

The last miller died in 1972, after which a new owner acquired the mill for preservation. The body was restored in 1977 by Jameson Marshall, and further conservation work followed in the early twenty-first century. Friston Windmill is listed Grade II* and remains one of the most significant surviving Suffolk post mills.
