Site overview

Ravensmoor Windmill is a Grade II listed former tower windmill on Wrexham Road at Burland. The brick tower dates from the early nineteenth century and stands between Acton and Burland, close to Ravensmoor. It is a circular tapering tower with windows on three levels, some blocked, and a boarded roof in place of the original roof and sails.

The former corn mill was last used for grinding around 1884, then converted in 1890 to pump water from an artesian well for part of the Dorfold estate. The wind-pumping mechanism was replaced in 1922 and remains on the roof. The building has since been adapted for residential use.

History

Ravensmoor Windmill stands south of Wrexham Road at Burland, between the villages of Acton and Burland and close to Ravensmoor. It is a former tower mill, built in brick as a circular tapering tower and dating from the early nineteenth century. The mill once stood on Ravensmoor Common, an area enclosed in 1838, and formed part of the rural corn-milling landscape of south Cheshire.

The mill ceased grinding corn around 1884. In 1890 it was adapted for a different wind-powered function, when a wind-pumping mechanism was installed to pump water from an adjacent artesian well for part of the Dorfold estate. That conversion gave the former tower mill a second technical life as a pumping structure. The wind-pumping mechanism was replaced in 1922 and remains in place on the roof.

The listed building description records the original roof and sails as gone, with a water-pumping mechanism installed on the roof. The tower has windows on three levels, some blocked, and has since been adapted for residential use. Ravensmoor Windmill is therefore both a former corn mill and a later wind-pumping tower, preserving an unusual sequence of wind-powered use within the Cheshire landscape.
