Site overview

Mill Lane Windmill stood in Shoreham-by-Sea and was one of several windmills in and around the town. It was a wooden smock mill before it was rebuilt in brick and converted to steam power. The mill was advertised for sale in 1832, when its wind-powered form was still part of Shoreham's milling landscape.

Its later windmill structure has not survived, and the site is now known through the Mill Lane locality.

History

Mill Lane Windmill formed part of the dense group of windmills once working in Shoreham-by-Sea. The mill stood in Mill Lane and worked as a corn mill. It was a wooden smock mill before later alteration changed its form.

In 1832 the original windmill in Mill Lane was offered for sale, and it was then associated with the transition from wind power to later brick-built and steam-powered milling. The later industrial history of the site included rebuilding in brick and conversion to steam power. The windmill structure has not survived, and the former mill site is now part of the built-up Mill Lane area of Shoreham.
