History

Windmill, dovecot,New Sauchie stands near New Sauchie and Fishcross in Clackmannanshire. It is widely known as Auchinbaird Windmill, New Sauchie Windmill, Sauchie Doocot or Auchinbaird Dovecot. The structure was built in the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century as a vaulted tower windmill. This Scottish form consisted of a fixed stone tower with a movable timber cap carrying sails, set above a vaulted basement or access chamber.

The surviving tower is built of red sandstone rubble and stands on the edge of a low ridge. It has a circular stone shell, opposed doorways at ground level, a vaulted lower chamber and openings in the walling. The original cap, sails and wind-powered machinery have not survived. Specialist accounts describe the structure as a grain mill, while some local accounts also associate it with pumping; the strongest surviving identity is as a windmill later adapted for dovecot use.

In the early nineteenth century the former windmill tower was converted into a dovecot or doocot. This phase added a brick domed roof with an oculus, a decorative rat course and a castellated parapet. The interior once contained pigeon nesting arrangements and a potence, although these features have been removed. The monument was scheduled on 9 January 1979 under the formal name Windmill, dovecot,New Sauchie. The conserved shell now survives as a rare Scottish vaulted tower windmill and later dovecot, preserving both industrial and estate-agricultural phases of use.
