History

Wester Hatton Windpump is a former wind-powered pump near Wester Hatton in Aberdeenshire. Donnachie and Stewart record the site at NJ 956162, on the edge of Broom Hill about 500 yards north-west of Wester Hatton farm. The remains consisted of an early wrought-iron windpump standing on a stone base and about 40 feet high.

The pump had been out of action for more than 100 years when recorded for Scottish Windmills: An Outline and Inventory. The same account states that it had apparently also been adapted at one time to power a threshing mill at Easter Hatton by the addition of pulleys and wire-rope drive. The authors noted that it could not really be considered a windmill, but included it as an interesting example of an iron windpump.

No construction date, maker, ownership sequence, or final working date has been established from the sources checked.
