Site overview
Bettisfield Windmill is a former brick tower corn mill at Cadney Bank, on Cadney Moss south-east of Bettisfield church. The windmill was built in 1790 and is described locally as the only windmill in the Maelor. It was circular, built of brick, and had two sails.
The Hughes family operated the mill through the nineteenth century. A steam mill was built by Edward and Sarah Hughes in 1868, after which the windmill gradually declined. It was still marked as working on the 1873 Ordnance Survey but was disused by the 1900 survey.
The surviving round tapering windmill base stands to two-storey height with doorways and window openings. It was listed at Grade II in 1962, despite partial survival and poor condition, as a rare survival of a formerly familiar building type.

History
Bettisfield Windmill stands at Cadney Bank on Cadney Moss, approximately 1.5 kilometres south-east of Bettisfield church. The site belongs to the corn-milling history of Bettisfield, where milling is recorded from the late eighteenth century. The Cadney Bank windmill was built in 1790 and is identified locally as the only windmill in the Maelor.
The mill was a circular brick tower mill. Local history records describe it as having two sails and as being operated by the Hughes family through the nineteenth century. Its working life overlapped with later changes in milling technology in the area. In 1868 Edward and Sarah Hughes built a steam mill, and the windmill gradually fell into disrepair after that change. It was still shown as working on the 1873 Ordnance Survey, but by the 1900 survey it was disused.
The surviving structure is a round tapering windmill base standing to two-storey height. It is built of brick, with doorways on the east and west sides and windows in both storeys. At the time of the Cadw description much of the brickwork was being renewed and a pitched roof was planned. Later photographic and specialist mill records identify the structure as a house-converted tower mill. Bettisfield Windmill was listed at Grade II on 16 November 1962, notwithstanding its partial survival and poor condition, as a rare surviving example of a once familiar building type.
