Site overview

Yr Hen Felin Wynt is a former tower windmill at Wick in the Vale of Glamorgan. It was probably erected by Samuel and William Thomas in 1825 and was known as Melin Du. The windmill once contained nine floors and had an external gallery.

Two buildings adjoined the mill: a barn and a granary or malting kiln with a cart-shed below. Samuel and William Thomas were recorded as maltsters in the 1851 census, connecting the mill with local malting as well as milling activity. The mill had ceased working by 1890 and was sold in 1910.

The tower was converted to a dwelling in 1981, with the stone house built on the site of the former granary or kiln. It is protected as a Grade II listed building.

History

Yr Hen Felin Wynt stands at Wick in the Vale of Glamorgan. It is a former tower windmill, later converted into domestic use, and survives as a prominent local landmark within the village.

The windmill was probably erected in 1825 by Samuel and William Thomas and was known as Melin Du. It was an unusually tall mill, once containing nine floors and an external gallery. The tower was associated with two adjoining buildings: a barn and a granary or malting kiln with a cart-shed beneath. The association with malting is strengthened by the 1851 census, which recorded Samuel and William Thomas as maltsters. The complex therefore formed part of the local grain-processing and malting economy of nineteenth-century Wick.

The mill had ceased working by 1890. It was sold in 1910 and later passed into domestic reuse. The tower was converted to a dwelling in 1981. During that conversion and redevelopment, the stone house was built on the site of the former granary or malting kiln. The conversion retained the powerful landmark quality of the old tower while adapting the structure for residential occupation.

Yr Hen Felin Wynt was listed at Grade II on 4 July 1973. The listing recognises the special interest of the surviving former windmill and its associated historic milling and malting context. The building is also identified in local Vale of Glamorgan records as Wick Old Windmill.
