Site overview

The Windmill Tower on Foel Fawr stands on the summit of the prominent hill about one kilometre north of Mynytho. It is a windmill tower of uncertain date, probably earlier nineteenth-century, and is marked on Ordnance Survey mapping as Foel Fawr. A National Trust plaque identifies the hill as Foel Felin Gwynt.

The tower is circular and built of rubble stone, with battered walls, a tall northern opening with a slab lintel, an eastern doorway with a slab lintel, and rough steps within the wall thickness. The walls become thinner at upper level and six holes survive at first-floor level. The structure was listed at Grade II in 1998 as one of the few surviving windmill towers and as a prominent landmark visible from far across the Llŷn Peninsula.

History

The Windmill Tower on Foel Fawr stands on the summit of a prominent hill about one kilometre north of Mynytho. The hill is marked on Ordnance Survey mapping as Foel Fawr, while a National Trust plaque identifies it as Foel Felin Gwynt. Its elevated position gives the tower exceptional visibility across the Llŷn Peninsula.

The tower is a former windmill of uncertain date, probably built in the earlier nineteenth century. It is a simple circular rubble-stone tower with battered walls. A tall northern opening has a slab lintel, and an eastern doorway also has a slab lintel. Rough steps survive within the thickness of the wall. Internally the walls are thinner at the upper level, and six holes remain in the wall at first-floor level.

The surviving remains preserve the visible form of a small hilltop windmill tower rather than a restored or converted mill. The structure was listed at Grade II on 1 April 1998. Its special interest lies in its rarity as one of the few windmill towers surviving in the region and in its strong landmark value from far across Llŷn.
