Site overview

Melin y Pant is a small former windmill at Pant y Gaseg farm near Bull Bay. The remains stand beside a dilapidated farm building in an exposed coastal position close to the windswept cliffs. Its exposed siting would have favoured wind power, but also contributed to the poor survival of the structure.

The origin and construction date are not firmly recorded, and the mill had probably stopped working by the 1880s. Local mill history suggests that it may have been too small to have served as an ordinary corn mill and may instead have powered farm machinery. The surviving remains are in very poor condition and represent one of the smaller and more fragmentary windmill sites on Anglesey.

History

Melin y Pant stands at Pant y Gaseg farm near Bull Bay, beside a dilapidated farm building in an exposed coastal location. The site is close to windswept cliffs, giving the former mill good exposure to wind but also leaving the structure vulnerable to weathering and decline.

The origin and date of the windmill are not clearly recorded. Local windmill accounts describe it as probably one of the smallest Anglesey windmills. Its size makes it unlikely that it served as a substantial ordinary corn mill, and it may instead have been used to power machinery on the farm. The available recorded history is therefore strongest for its survival, setting, and later ruin rather than for a detailed working chronology.

The windmill had probably stopped working by the 1880s. The remains now stand in poor condition next to the farm building, preserving the site of a small rural wind-powered structure rather than a complete tower or converted mill. Melin y Pant is important within the Anglesey windmill record because it illustrates the smaller, farm-based end of the island's wind-powered buildings, distinct from the larger tower corn mills that dominate the surviving listed record.
