Site overview

East Knoyle Windmill is a former tower corn mill on Windmill Hill. It was probably built around 1800 and is constructed of rubble stone with two decorative ashlar bands. The tapered circular tower stands on a circular platform with steps from ground level.

It had weatherboarded capping and sails until about 1930 and was later adapted with a renewed tiled roof and four hipped dormers. The building is Grade II listed.

History

East Knoyle Windmill was probably built around 1800 as a tower corn mill on Windmill Hill. The surviving tower is of rubble stone with two decorative bands of ashlar. It is circular and tapered, standing on a circular platform approached by steps from ground level.

The former mill has two opposing blocked doorways, with the northern doorway retaining a beaded stone architrave. Former loading bays on the east and west sides have louvred shutters. The tower retained weatherboarded capping and sails until about 1930.

It was later adapted with a renewed tiled roof and four hipped dormers with shutters. East Knoyle Windmill was listed at Grade II in 1966 and survives as a converted former mill tower.
