Site overview

Burton Pidsea Mill is a former tower corn mill on Greens Lane, Burton Pidsea. A windmill existed in the village from the medieval period, and an earlier South Field mill had gone by 1852. The present tower mill and mill house were built on a new site in 1834.

The former mill was later capped, lost its sails and was converted to a dwelling. It is listed at Grade II.

History

Burton Pidsea had wind-powered milling from the medieval period, with a windmill present from the 1260s. A later mill stood in South Field in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and had gone by 1852. The present Burton Pidsea Mill was built in 1834 as a tower corn mill with a mill house on a new site beside Greens Lane.

The tower later ceased working and survived without sails. By the twentieth century it had a conical roof and remained as a former mill tower. It was listed at Grade II on 6 July 1987. The former tower mill has since been converted to a dwelling. Burton Pidsea Mill survives as a converted nineteenth-century tower corn mill on Greens Lane.
