Site overview
Darrington Windmill is a former tower windmill on Moor Lane at Darrington. It was probably built in the late eighteenth or very early nineteenth century and later altered. The handmade-brick tower encloses a timber frame, with a conical basement and four stages.
The superstructure is missing, but the interior retains the vertical drive shaft, large iron cogwheels and three sets of grindstones.

History
Darrington Windmill was built on Moor Lane at Darrington, probably in the late eighteenth or very early nineteenth century. It was constructed as a tower windmill and later became a store. The tower is of handmade brick enclosing a timber frame, with a conical basement and four stages.
The basement has a wide segmental-arched wagon entrance, with further blocked or altered doorways and windows around the tower. The superstructure is missing. Internally, central timber pillars carry massive moulded saddle beams supporting the first and second-stage floors independently of the brick shell.
The second stage retains the original vertical drive shaft, large iron cogwheels and three sets of grindstones. The windmill was listed at Grade II in 1987.
