Muston Mill stands on Mill Hill on the outskirts of Filey, but its historic name links it with Muston. The site has a long milling history, with local parish history recording references to a mill from 1341. The present structure is a nineteenth-century tower mill. Muston Parish Council records the current mill as probably built in 1826 and in use until 1932; the mill's own history also preserves a tradition that the present tower replaced an earlier mill in the mid nineteenth century.

The mill worked as a wind-powered corn mill. Its exposed position on Mill Hill made it a prominent landmark between Muston and Filey. After its working life ended in the twentieth century, the tower became derelict. Historic photographs record the mill in a declining state during the later twentieth century, before more recent restoration returned the building to active use.

The restored mill now survives as a major visual landmark and as an example of commercial reuse of a former tower corn mill. Although the full details of its earliest machinery and working ownership are less firmly preserved than its later survival, Muston Mill remains one of the most recognisable windmill structures on the Yorkshire coast.
