Site overview

North Frodingham Mill was a wind-powered corn mill at North Frodingham in the East Riding of Yorkshire. A windmill is recorded in the parish from the sixteenth century and probably stood where the later mill did, on the south-west edge of the village. Milling was evidently given up around 1915, and the mill was later demolished.

The site is now recorded as a former windmill site rather than a surviving tower, but it preserves the location of North Frodingham's wind-powered corn-milling tradition.

History

North Frodingham Mill stood on the south-west edge of the village. A windmill is recorded at North Frodingham in the sixteenth century, and the later mill probably occupied the same general site. The mill served the arable farming landscape of the parish and formed part of the local provision for corn milling.

The village history records that milling was evidently given up around 1915. After the end of working use, the mill was later demolished. The present site is therefore not a complete surviving windmill, but the location remains historically important as the probable continuation of a long-standing North Frodingham windmill site.

The record should be kept separate from nearby Foston and Brigham milling sites. North Frodingham Mill is best entered as a former tower corn mill site, with the main documented phases being the early record of a village windmill, the later south-west village site, the end of milling around 1915, and subsequent demolition.
