Site overview

Monkhill Windmill is a former tower corn mill at Monkhill in Beaumont parish, north-west of Carlisle. The structure is recorded as a conical, three-storey sandstone former windmill with two ground-floor entrances beneath wooden lintels and windows at three levels. It has been converted to domestic use, preserving the tower as a recognisable historic windmill structure within the rural settlement.

The mill was listed at Grade II on 19 September 1984. Photographic records from the early twenty-first century show the converted windmill after its working life had ended. The known history is strongest for the building's surviving form, corn-milling identity, later house conversion, and formal listed-building protection.

History

Monkhill Windmill stands in the settlement of Monkhill within Beaumont parish. It is recorded as a former tower corn mill and is one of the surviving windmill structures in the rural landscape north-west of Carlisle. The building is conical in form, has three storeys, and is built of sandstone. Its external features include two ground-floor entrances with wooden lintels and windows at three levels, preserving the clear architectural character of a former tower mill.

The mill's recorded function was corn milling. After the end of its working life it was converted to residential use, a change that retained the tower as a visible historic structure while removing its original industrial function. Early twenty-first-century photographs record the building as a converted windmill at Monkhill.

Monkhill Windmill was listed at Grade II on 19 September 1984. The listing recognises the former windmill as part of the historic built fabric of Beaumont parish, where it stands among a group of mainly rural listed buildings. Although the detailed working chronology, construction date, and machinery history are not firmly established, the surviving sandstone tower, conical form, house conversion, and designation provide a clear record of the mill's transition from wind-powered corn mill to protected domestic reuse.
