Site overview

Filey Mill was a wind-powered corn mill at Filey in North Yorkshire. It is recorded in Yorkshire mill archive indexes as a distinct Filey mill site and should be kept separate from Muston Mill, the surviving tower mill on Mill Hill between Muston and Filey. The available mill record identifies Filey Mill as a former tower mill site rather than a surviving complete windmill.

Its value in the gazetteer is in preserving the separate Filey town windmill record and preventing it being merged with the better-known Muston Mill.

History

Filey Mill is recorded as a wind-powered corn mill at Filey in North Yorkshire. Specialist mill archive indexes include Filey Mill as a named Yorkshire mill site, and the record should be kept distinct from Muston Mill, which stands separately on Mill Hill and has its own long history.

The surviving public record for Filey Mill is limited but useful. It identifies a separate Filey windmill site rather than a surviving restored mill. The site is best treated as a former tower corn mill site, with the output recorded as corn and the town retained as Filey.

Because Filey and Muston are close together, this record is important for database separation. Muston Mill should carry the surviving Mill Hill tower-mill history, while Filey Mill should remain a separate site-only record for the former Filey tower corn mill.
