Site overview

Spann Carr Windmill Tower is a former tower mill on Matlock Road near Kelstedge in Ashover parish. Built in 1807 by James and Matthew Beresford of Hazelhurst Farm, it is a four-storey tapering circular tower of coursed squared gritstone with tooled dressings to the door and window openings. The mill was adapted to steam power, with an engine house and chimney later erected, although both have been removed.

Its machinery and fittings have gone, but the tower retains four hearths that emerge at two vents at third-floor level. An associated outbuilding to the east, built around 1807, also survives. Both the windmill tower and the outbuilding were listed at Grade II on 18 May 1989.

History

Spann Carr Windmill Tower stands off Matlock Road near Kelstedge in Ashover parish. The mill was built in 1807 by James and Matthew Beresford of Hazelhurst Farm and was a tower mill of substantial gritstone construction. Its form is a tapering circular tower of four storeys, built of coursed squared gritstone with tooled dressings to the openings.

The tower preserves several structural details of its working arrangement. At ground level there is an east-facing doorway, while at first-floor level two opposed doorways face north and south. Each of the first-floor doorways formerly had a flight of stone steps. Rectangular window openings survive, originally with small-paned metal windows, one of which remains. The machinery and internal fittings have been removed, but the tower retains four hearths that emerge through two vents at third-floor level.

The mill was later adapted to steam power. During that phase an engine house and chimney were erected, although both have since been removed. A separate outbuilding to the east of the windmill survives and was formerly connected with the working complex. It dates from around 1807 and is a single-storey and overloft gritstone building with a stone-slated roof, doorways on the west side, a first-floor doorway reached by stone steps, and a blocked ground-floor window.

Spann Carr Windmill Tower and the associated outbuilding were listed at Grade II on 18 May 1989. A planning record from the same year relates to listed building consent for conversion works to form a dwelling, identifying the building as The Old Windmill on Matlock Road. The surviving tower and outbuilding preserve a rare local windmill group whose fabric records both wind-powered milling and later steam adaptation.
