Site overview
Heanton Windmill is a roofless former tower mill in Petrockstow parish. It is recorded as a tower corn mill of 1756 and survives as a ruinous stone tower. The Grade II listed structure has squared stone rubble tapering walls, a circular plan, evidence of two doorways, and two high window openings.
Its walls stand about 20 to 25 feet high. The mill was also used for pumping water to Heanton Satchville in the adjoining parish of Huish, and a pipeline associated with that use was recorded at the time of listing. Photographs from 1973 and 2007 record the ruinous tower after the end of its working life.
The windmill was listed at Grade II on 25 March 1988.

History
Heanton Windmill stands in Petrockstow parish and is recorded as a former tower mill. Specialist mill records identify it as a corn mill dating from 1756, while the listed building entry describes it as an eighteenth-century windmill. A date stone reading “F.B. 1756” was reported in earlier sources, although it was not visible when the building was inspected in 1987.
The surviving tower is roofless and derelict. It is circular in plan, with tapering walls of squared stone rubble. The structure retains evidence of two doorways, although the north-east doorway is the clearly original opening. That entrance has a heavy wooden lintel on the inner face, and the external stonework suggests that the doorway was originally arched. The walls survive to approximately 20 to 25 feet high, with two window openings set fairly high in the tower.
The mill's history includes more than corn grinding. It was formerly used for pumping water to Heanton Satchville in the neighbouring parish of Huish, and a pipeline associated with that use was recorded when the tower was listed. The ruin was photographed in the Muggeridge Collection in June 1973 and in later Geograph views in 2007. Heanton Windmill was listed at Grade II on 25 March 1988, preserving a roofless but substantial stone tower that records both milling and estate water-supply use.
