Site overview

Matching Post Mill was a post corn mill at Matching Tye in Essex. Specialist mill records identify the site as a post mill and record its function as corn milling. The surviving fabric is reduced to roundhouse remains rather than a complete post mill body.

Photographic register material records the surviving roundhouse in 1980, and modern windmill listings continue to identify the site as one of the surviving Essex windmill remains. The site therefore preserves the lower structural trace of a former post mill in the rural Matching landscape.

History

Matching Post Mill stood at Matching Tye and is recorded as a post corn mill. Its present survival is limited to the roundhouse remains, a form of survival typical of post mills where the timber buck, trestle, sails, and machinery have gone but the base structure or its walling remains.

The recorded function was corn milling. Later specialist records identify the site as a surviving post mill remnant and describe the survival as roundhouse remains. A 1980 photographic record captured the surviving roundhouse, confirming that the post-mill base remained visible after the loss of the working mill.

Matching Post Mill is now best understood as a site-and-roundhouse survival. The remaining fabric preserves the former windmill's position at Matching Tye and records part of the local agricultural milling landscape, even though the working body of the mill has gone.
