Site overview

Langstone Windmill is a Grade II listed tower mill at Langstone, now incorporated into The Old Mill residential complex. It was built around 1730 and worked in conjunction with the nearby tide mill, forming an unusual wind-and-tide milling site on the Langstone waterfront. The windmill was a four-storey tapered tower mill with a hand-winded domed cap, four common sails, and a wooden windshaft.

It had become derelict by 1934 and was converted to residential accommodation by 1939, with the tower tarred and a new cap constructed. The converted tower survives beside the former tide mill, mill store, sea wall, and sluices.

History

Langstone Windmill is a former tower corn mill at Langstone. It stands as part of The Old Mill, a close group comprising the windmill, a tide mill, and a mill store. The windmill was built around 1730 and worked in conjunction with the tide mill close by, giving Langstone a distinctive combined wind-and-tide milling site on the harbour edge.

The windmill was a four-storey tapered circular tower mill. It had a hand-winded domed cap, four common sails, and a wooden windshaft. The tower shows evidence of having been raised by one storey at some point. The wider mill group included the tide mill built across a creek, associated with a sea wall and sluices, and a mill store built on brick piers so that barges could pass beneath in tidal water.

The windmill was derelict by 1934. By 1939 it had been converted to residential accommodation, with the tower tarred and a new cap built. The conversion was designed by Ernst L. Freud, and Flora Twort was the first resident. The listed structure now preserves the tower as part of a domestic building rather than as a working mill. Its setting beside Langstone Harbour, the tide mill, and the former mill pond keeps the relationship between wind power, tidal water power, and coastal milling clearly legible.
