Site overview

Guilton Mill at Ash was a wind-powered smock corn mill. The Mills Archive identifies it as a corn mill in the historic county of Kent, and specialist windmill records place the site at TR 283 584. Later photographs show the mill without sweeps or fantail, and the smock mill was demolished in October 1923.

The base remained and was later converted into a house. The surviving structure is therefore the converted base of a former smock mill rather than a complete mill with cap, sweeps, and machinery. It preserves the visible footprint and lower fabric of the Ash wind-powered milling site.

History

Guilton Mill was a smock corn mill at Ash, near Sandwich. It is recorded as a wind-powered corn mill, with the Mills Research Group giving the site as TR 283 584. The windmill belonged to a wider group of Ash and Guilton mills, including post and smock mills recorded in the historic parish.

The mill survived into the early twentieth century but no longer as a complete working smock mill. Archive photographs record Guilton Mill without sweeps or fantail. It was demolished in October 1923, leaving the base. The remaining base was later converted into a house, and modern windmill records identify the site as a smock mill with its base converted for domestic use.

Guilton Mill is therefore represented by surviving lower fabric rather than by a complete windmill. Its recorded history establishes the site as a wind-powered corn mill and preserves its later transition from working smock mill to domestic conversion.
